Geek’s Guide to Melbourne

Looking for stuff to do while we ride out the rest of this Melbourne winter? Then here are our favourites, all with a geek-ish spin of course.

Do geek:

If you’re looking for an unusual, fun and potentially friendship ruining experience try Escapism at Strike bowling bar. The idea is this: You and your mates get locked in a room. You have 50 minutes to find a way out. Sounds easy right? Wrong! You’ll have to use the combined power of your brain meats to solve puzzles and uncover hidden clues to set yourself free before the clock runs out… or before you want to kill each other due to heated disagreements over what that key you found really unlocks…. whichever comes first.

See geek:

If you fancy feasting your eyes on some French New Wave, experimental short films or the latest edgy slasher flick then head on over to the Melbourne International Film Festival. Running from 30th July – 16th August and screening in a number of cinemas across the CBD, the MIFF boasts Australian and International showcases, retrospectives, programs of shorts and film making masterclasses. No matter what genre or style you’re into MIFF is bound to have something that tickles your fancy.

Drink geek:

Have you ever wanted to go to a bar dressed in a Yoshi one-sie, watch people play Dance Dance Revolution on a giant screen and challenge your friends to a rousing game of Mario Cart on Nintendo 64? Well now you can thanks to Beta Bar in Hawthorn. Every Friday night the Glenferrie Social Club gets transformed into the penultimate geeks wet dream. We’re talking games played on the latest consoles plus old school consoles, arcade machines, Occulus Rift, pool tables, board/card games galore and GIANT JENGA! The drinks are cheap, the games are fun and the cosplayers are plentiful!
